Windsurfing is a great family activity. Grown ups and kids can all get something from being out on the water, learning skills and having fun. And even if one or more family members would rather stay dry, there’s usually plenty to do on or along the beach.
Plus, if you combine your family vacation with some luxury accommodation, you’ll also be treated to fine dining, beautiful views and a range of other facilities to enjoy. That is why Planet Windsurf Holidays has brought us five of the best luxury family windsurf destinations in Europe for 2019.
Boasting a wide range of activities for couples and families, and as the first five star luxury property in the Sagres region, Martinhal ticks all the right boxes. Surrounded by a national park and with stunning views out over the Atlantic, this family-focused resort is also perfectly situated for windsurfing. The beach is right next to the resort, with family learning zones keeping it safe for beginners. And with more than 300 sunny days a year, and regular winds accelerated by the landscape, conditions are generally excellent.
Limnos is an unspoiled destination complete with beautiful beaches and traditional villages that avoids the worst excesses of Greek tourism. Keros Bay offers a great combination of flat water, chop and waves – all on the same beach. And with excellent wind conditions and warm water throughout the summer, it makes this a great place for a luxury family break.
The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is one of the world’s most renowned windsurfing destinations. And it’s just a short haul flight from the UK. For true luxury, head to Corralejo where you can find the only five star luxury hotel on the island. This northern spot is the best place on the island to windsurf from June to September. It is not as gusty as the southern parts of the island, making it more suited to a family break.
Porto Pollo is located in the windiest spot in Sardinia, with white sandy beaches and clear waters that are reminiscent of the Caribbean. It’s all just two hours from the UK by direct flight. There is a choice of five star accommodation here too, including the Hotel Capo D’Orso and Valle Dell Erica, as well as plenty of other luxury choices. The bay is a short drive from the accommodation but offers plenty of space for windsurfers of all ability levels. And the dunes offer plenty of shelter from the wind for non-surfing family members to enjoy the surroundings.
Chicken Bay in Karpathos is the ideal spot for beginners and kids to learn the ropes in safety. And also great for families is the huge choice of other activities on offer, including some superb mountain biking trails and fantastic abseiling. For more advanced riders, there is Gun Bay. It’s a true high wind spot with some flat water near the shore. You can also surf out to Paradise Bay where the wind really gets up and the perfectly flat water means conditions are superb.
