Together with Aruba and Curacao, Bonaire forms the third part of the ABC islands that make up the Dutch Antilles. These are some of the Caribbean’s most striking islands, situated just off the northern coast of Venezuela. Of the three, Bonaire is the least developed in terms of tourism which means that it is less busy throughout the year, with vast stretches of open water that are just begging to be windsurfed. But the reasons why Bonaire might be the best windsurfing destination in the Caribbean don’t stop there.
Planet Windsurf Holidays gives us the scoop on why this is one of their favourite destinations this year:
The location of the island is just south of the hurricane belt that batters much of the Caribbean every year. That means the climate is more stable than some of the other Caribbean destinations. However, the island doesn’t escape the winds entirely. In fact, Bonaire is regularly buffeted by strong gusts throughout the year, which is another reason that it meets with windsurfer’s approval.
Perhaps the most significant reason why Bonaire is at the top of many a windsurfer’s must-visit list, however, is the huge flat water lagoon. It is one of the biggest and best in the world, and with steady winds and accommodation right off the beach, it more or less ticks every possible windsurfing box.
With the combination of quiet waters, steady strong winds and a large flat water lagoon, it’s easy to see why so many Brits are willing to make the long flight to the Caribbean to experience the conditions in Bonaire. But the positives don’t stop there.
The island is also widely known for the warmth and friendliness of its locals. This is possibly because there are fewer tourists and fewer imposing holiday resorts. You won’t feel like just another number in a package holiday but more like you’re experiencing genuine Caribbean culture first hand. But that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy a little bit of luxury while on your hard-earned vacation. Sorobon Beach Resort and Apartments is one of our favourite resorts with your room located right on the spot. If you’re looking for affordability combined with comfort and great amenities, opt for the apartments which boast panoramic views of the stunning bay and access to all the great amenities at Sorobon Resort as well as their own pool. Moreover, if you stay at Sorobon Beach Resort, and windsurf at the Dunkerbeck Pro Center on site at the hotel, you can access the water from 7:30 in the morning, and until 6:30 in the evening. Does it get any better than that?!
It’s an ideal family location too, with plenty to do for children of all ages and anyone that doesn’t want to spend all their time windsurfing. Bonaire is also one of the world’s best diving and snorkelling destinations and there is also great hiking available. Go bird watching in the colossal Washington-Slagbaai National Park on the northern edge of the island or shop in the picturesque towns.
If you’re looking for pumping nightlife, then this is probably not the destination for you. But then if you’re serious about windsurfing you probably don’t want to be out until the small hours anyway. But what you do have is a choice of superb restaurants and friendly bars where you can relax after a hard day on the water.
So, if all of the above hasn’t convinced you that Bonaire is one of the best windsurf destinations in the Caribbean then you’ll just have to go and see for yourself. We’re sure you’ll come around to Planet’s way of thinking soon enough….
